This week Wednesday, we’ll be watching the second episode in the 10 part “Catholicism” series led by Fr. Robert Barron titled “HAPPY ARE WE: THE TEACHINGS OF JESUS” followed by a short discussion. A summary of the episode is below. We watched the first episode last month and will continue watching an episode the fourth Wednesday of each month through the rest of the year. So this week, we’ll be meeting in the Connect room in the basement of Holy Spirit at 7:30pm and once we’re done, we’ll head down the street to Applebees for a bite to eat like we usually do.
The revelation of Jesus as God is accompanied by a stunning invitation to a unique new way of life, explained in the teachings of Jesus. To every generation, the words of Jesus have proven fascinating, disorienting, sometimes confounding, deeply transformative, and always unforgettable. Father Barron highlights the Beatitudes, the path of non-violence and lessons of forgiveness, care for the poor and our relationship with God as presented in the parables. Jesus’ teachings are illuminated during Fr. Barron’s pilgrimages to Poland, Germany, Spain and New York City. Commentaries at these sites also show how the Catholic Church is a living culture, which gives witness to the inviolable dignity of the human person.

As most of you probably know already lent is almost here and this Wednesday is Ash Wednesday. So we thought it only appropriate that instead of our regular Connect meeting, we meet as a group to attend mass at Holy Spirit Church at 7 pm (not in the chapel like we do for adoration, in the actual Church). Please try to get there a few minutes early so we can all get together in the narthex and sit as a group.

Please bring a snack to pass and your own drinks. Go ahead and write on the facebook wall what you’re bringing so that we can get a good variety. As always, all are welcome, so invite your friends!

This week Sunday, we will be having our January social event! We’ll be joining with Rockford’s Trifecta young adult group for 11 am Mass at Our Lady of Consolation (4865 11 Mile Rd. NE Rockford, MI), followed by an afternoon of tubing at Pando Winter Sports Park(8076 Belding Rd Rockford, MI) and lunch in the lodge. The cost is $20 per person for 3 hrs, which I know sounds like a lot, but is pretty much the going rate for tubing. It is well worth it though, as it’s a lot of fun!

This week Wednesday, we will be starting something new that we’ve decided to integrate into Connect this year! We will be watching the first episode in the 10 part “Catholicism” series led by Fr. Robert Barron at 7:30 in the Connect room in the basement of Holy Spirit. The first episode is titled “Amazed and Afraid: The Revelation of God Become Man” (a short summary is below). We will continue this throughout the year watching another episode the fourth Wednesday of each month and will follow with a brief discussion each time. Below is also a short overview of of the series as a whole and a link to the website where you can watch a video preview if you’d like.
Episode 1-“Amazed and Afraid: The Revelation of God Become Man”
The strange and dangerous words of Jesus of Nazareth set up a drama that will culminate in a surprising battle between two kings, and in the wake of this conflict, an empire will be defeated – and the world will be changed. Father Robert Barron illuminates and explains the conviction of the Catholic Faith that Jesus of Nazareth is the promised Messiah, and the revelation of God become man. He shows how Jesus fulfills the four tasks of the Messiah, according to the Old and New Testaments, and how the living legacy of Christ, God and Messiah, is proclaimed by the Church. Join Father Barron as he addresses some of the most controversial questions about the life and identity of Jesus Christ and travels through the mysterious and sacred places of the Holy Land of Israel and the eternal city of Rome.
