Connect’s SIXTH Annual Trick or Can Food Drive

23 October, 2012 (19:11) | Community Service, Events | By: Tom Westrick

Halloween night, we will be having Connect’s SIXTH Annual Trick or Can Food Drive to benefit Holy Spirit’s Food Pantry!  We’ll get dressed up, meet at 5:30pm in the Connect room, get into teams and go door to door in the neighborhoods surrounding Holy Spirit and say “Trick or Can!” when someone answers the door.  Hopefully this results in lots of food donations, which we take to Holy Spirit’s food pantry where the food will be distributed to people in need for Thanksgiving. Afterwards, we’ll head out and grab a bite to eat.

23 October, 2012 (19:08) | Events, Fellowship, Random | By: Tom Westrick

It’s that time of year again!  Come and join us at the Raha home in Grand Haven (see event for address)  for the Connect Scavenger Hunt/Halloween Party Saturday, October 27th at 5:30pm!  Food will be provided at 5:30 and people should arrive no later than 6pm to divide into teams and start the Scavenger Hunt around the city.  It’s very important to RSVP in order for the proper planning to happen and it’s also very important that everyone arrive on time, as all teams must start at the same time.  After the Scavenger Hunt, we’ll meet back at the house and enjoy snacks and drinks around the bonfire.  Come dressed in your best Halloween costume, as long as it’s nothing scary or gory. Best dressed will win a prize!  And bring friends, even if they aren’t Connect members, the more the merrier!

Handing out ‘Trick or Can’ flyers & Episode 10 of the Catholicism Series-“WORLD WITHOUT END: THE LAST THINGS”

16 October, 2012 (18:55) | Community Service, Events, Fellowship | By: Tom Westrick

This week Wednesday, we’ll be meeting in the Connect room in the basement of Holy Spirit at 6pm to hand out flyers in the neighborhoods surrounding Holy Spirit for our ‘Trick or Can’ event happening the following Wednesday, Halloween night.  Once we’re done handing out flyers, we’ll meet back in the Connect room around 7:30pm to watch the 10th and last episode of the Catholicism Series by Fr. Robert Barron that we started in January.  It’s titled “WORLD WITHOUT END: THE LAST THINGS” and a brief description is below.  After we watch the movie and have a short discussion, we’ll head out to Applebees for a bite to eat.

Explore the Church’s conviction that life here and now is preparation for an extraordinary world that is yet to come – a supernatural destiny. Father Barron presents the Catholic vision of death, judgment, heaven, hell and purgatory as he journeys to Florence, Ireland and Rome.  The vision of the Church sees beyond this world and invites us to consider a world without end. Father Barron shows how this vision is supported by the mystery and truth of the Resurrection of Jesus.

Theology on Tap-“The HHS Mandate, Religious Freedom and Catholic Moral Teaching”

2 October, 2012 (11:58) | Events, Fellowship, Theology on Tap | By: Tom Westrick

The time has come for Connect to host another Theology on Tap!  Please join us this week Wednesday at Ucello’s in Standale (4787 Lake Michigan Drive Walker, MI 49534) at 6:30pm (note location has changed since last week’s email, it is no longer at Main Street Pub in Allendale).  Dr. Marshall (a current Aquinas professor) will be speaking on the HHS Mandate. The title of his talk is “The HHS Mandate, Religious Freedom and Catholic Moral Teaching.”  For those of you who are not familiar with TOT, it is a nice laid back atmosphere where we listen to a speaker on a particular topic while socializing and having a bite to eat.  If you know of anyone who might be interested in Connect, this perfect opportunity to get them involved!

Episode 9 of the Catholicism Series- “THE FIRE OF HIS LOVE: PRAYER AND THE LIFE OF THE SPIRIT”

25 September, 2012 (17:52) | Events, Fellowship | By: Tom Westrick

This week Wednesday, we’ll be meeting in the Connect room in the basement of Holy Spirit at 7:30pm to watch episode 9 of the Catholicism Series by Fr. Robert Barron that we started in January.  It’s titled “THE FIRE OF HIS LOVE: PRAYER AND THE LIFE OF THE SPIRIT” and a brief description is below.  After we watch the movie and have a short discussion, we’ll head out to Applebees for a bite to eat.

In this lesson, Father Barron explores Catholic spirituality, which is centered on prayer. As the Catechism of the Catholic Church states: “Prayer is the lifting up of the mind and the heart to God.”  On pilgrimage to the places where the great saints and spiritual masters lived, Father Barron explores the different types of prayer: contemplation; adoration; petition; and intercession. In telling the stories of Catholics like Thomas Merton, St. Theresa of Avila and St. John of the Cross, Fr. Barron demonstrates how the human person can be transformed through prayer that manifests a deep, spiritual commitment centered in Christ.

Cleaning at the Pregnancy Resource Center-Wyoming location

17 September, 2012 (16:52) | Community Service, Events | By: Tom Westrick

This week Wednesday, we will be doing our monthly service project, cleaning at the Pregnancy Resource Center at 6:30pm.  However, instead of cleaning at the downtown location on Cherry like we usually do, we will be moving to the Wyoming location (2438 28th St. SW Wyoming, MI 49519).  Due to some recent regulations, they need our help at this location a lot more than the other so we’re going to try it out at least for a few weeks.  Below is a link to a map of the area and you can put in your address and get directions if you’d like.  As always, we will find a local restaurant to grab a bite to eat after we’re done cleaning.

Holy Spirit Parish Festival!

11 September, 2012 (18:55) | Events, Fellowship | By: Tom Westrick

This weekend is the Parish Festival at Holy Spirit!  We are not technically  having a Connect event to attend, but seeing as they allow us to meet there each week, we’d like to help bring awareness and support the parish.  The festival is a fun time for parishioners and the surrounding community with food, games, raffles and entertainment for all ages, but it also serves another purpose. A portion of the proceeds from the Festival are used to support the many Holy Spirit Parish organizations and 10% of the festival proceeds will be donated to the West Michigan Food Bank.  Below is a link to the festival website with a schedule of specific events.
